What you need to know
What you need to know
- An ultra-credible "amp-in-a-box" that goes beyond a simple preamp, featuring a phase inverter, power amp simulation, and output transformer for a fuller "Plexi" feel.
- Two Marshall characters in one click thanks to the Super Bass / Super Lead selector, ranging from thick and smoky grit to the sharp bite of classic British tones.
- Independent Boost + internal routing : use the boost alone, the DLS alone, or both, and choose the order (boost before for more saturation, after for a clean volume boost).
- Dedicated +10 dB Line Out for recording or sending to a mixing console, while keeping the standard output for your amp.

A "Deluxe" Evolution Designed as a True Marshall Amp at Your Feet
The Dirty Little Secret Deluxe follows the lineage of pedals that capture the spirit of a Marshall Plexi : snappy attack, expressive mids, and that famous "kerrang" that built the rock sound. Here, the approach goes beyond emulating a simple gain stage: the pedal integrates blocks usually associated with amp architecture (phase inverter, simulated power section, output transformer) to achieve a more organic response closer to a pushed amp.
This Deluxe version also modernizes ergonomics: the Super Bass / Super Lead selector and Presence control are now directly accessible for instant adjustment of brightness and bite without opening the enclosure.
Who It's For and Which Styles the Dirty Little Secret Deluxe Excels In
The Dirty Little Secret Deluxe is aimed at guitarists seeking an authentic British tone on any backline: too tame clean combos, US-style amps, or modern heads used as a platform. It can become your always-on sound base (light dynamic crunch) or your main saturation engine, covering classic rock to hard rock, as well as punk, heavy, stoner, and muscular blues-rock.
In the studio, it excels at stacking tight rhythm tracks with mids that naturally sit in the mix. Live, the Super Bass / Super Lead switch and integrable boost allow you to move from a crunchy verse to a denser chorus, or make a solo stand out without losing definition.
Controls, Modes, and Setup Tips
The heart of the pedal operates like an amp: Master is placed before the phase inverter and transformer (like a real circuit), while Preamp controls the amount of drive with an extended range, offering cleaner lows at the bottom and more pronounced Marshall saturation at the top.
Presence becomes a formidable finishing tool: it is an external low-pass filter that attenuates about 3 dB above 1.59 kHz when set to minimum, then progressively opens the upper spectrum. The 3-band EQ (Treble/Middle/Bass) is based on a passive Marshall-style design: interactive, musical, and perfect for shaping the tone according to your pickups and amp.
The Boost section is designed as a tube preamp stage simulator, usable independently. Thanks to the internal Effect Order, place it before the DLS to load the input and achieve denser saturation with a more aggressive JCM spirit, or after to increase overall volume without sacrificing clarity. An internal Tightness control (high-pass filter) tightens the low end: up to 230 Hz for a cleaner palm-mute and more modern rhythms.
The Sound
Expect responsive saturation : the Dirty Little Secret Deluxe reacts very well to guitar volume and picking attack, with a blend of grain, dynamics, and slight compression reminiscent of a pushed amp. In Super Lead, the sound becomes more incisive, more present in the upper mids, ideal for snappy riffs and cutting leads. In Super Bass, you gain roundness and thickness, perfect for fatter rhythms and a smokier low-mid range.
The Dirty Little Secret family is found on pedalboards of artists like Joe Trohman (Fall Out Boy) and Paul Leary (Butthole Surfers), proof of its status as a classic "Marshall-in-a-box" when it comes to getting a big rock sound without hauling a full backline.

Questions frequently asked
Does the Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret Deluxe produce a Marshall Plexi-like sound?
The Super Bass / Super Lead selector adjusts the tonal character: Super Lead enhances the mid-highs' bite, while Super Bass adds more warmth. The phase inverter blocks, power amp simulation, and output transformer contribute to the pushed amp response.
What power supply is needed for this pedal?
The required power supply is a 9 V DC source with center negative, drawing a minimum of 7 mA. No battery is included or supported, and the power supply is not included.
How does the built-in boost function work?
The Boost section features Boost and Boost Vol controls and can operate independently. The internal Effect Order switch places the boost either before the DLS section to increase saturation or after it to raise overall volume. An internal Tightness control applies a high-pass filter up to 230 Hz to tighten the bass.
Can both outputs be used simultaneously?
A dedicated Line Out at +10 dB can be used simultaneously with the standard 6.35 mm jack output.
How are presence and EQ adjusted?
The Presence control acts as an external low-pass filter, with a cutoff at 1.59 kHz and about 3 dB attenuation at minimum. The passive Treble, Middle, and Bass EQ allows further tone shaping with a Marshall-style architecture.
