From Cult Patch to Pedal Format: The "Soft Focus" Legacy Deluxe Version
Originally, the name "Soft Focus" refers to a legendary patch on a Yamaha FX500 multi-effects unit, a true shoegaze fuel: a spacious reverb enriched with modulation and micro pitch variations, designed to layer and transform a guitar into a soundscape. Catalinbread first condensed this spirit into a simpler pedal easier to integrate on a pedalboard, then pushed the concept further with the Soft Focus Deluxe : more control, several dedicated programs, and above all the missing delay from the original patch to regain the typical animation and breathing of these textures.
For Whom and Which Styles?
The Soft Focus Deluxe is aimed at guitarists (and bassists) who want an all-in-one effect to build wide sounds without multiplying pedals: ideal from intermediate to advanced levels, seeking an inspiring and immediately musical sound. It excels in shoegaze, dream pop, ambient, post-rock, indie, film music, and any context where soundscapes, swells, and reverb tails that breathe with the playing are desired.
In the studio, it allows quickly establishing a sonic identity (grain, depth, perceived width) and varying intensity during tracking. On stage, it's a formidable pedal to switch from a "misty" verse to a wall of sound chorus, notably thanks to the built-in distortion and tap tempo.
Features, Controls, and Routing Logic
The heart of the Soft Focus Deluxe is a spatial engine combining reverb, modulation, and pitch processing, plus a fully adjustable delay. The program selector lets you navigate among 6 variations, each highlighting a different facet (very long reverb, deeper modulation, shimmer, delay with octave, etc.). Dedicated knobs allow precise tweaking of the recipe: Mix (blend), Mod (modulation), Verb (reverb), Dly (delay level), Time (delay time), and Dst Lvl (distortion level).
The distortion is independent and footswitchable : you can use it alone, only the spatial part, or combine both. The Series / Parallel switch changes the architecture: in series, distortion drives the spatial engine for dense, saturated soundscapes; in parallel, distortion and ambience coexist on two paths, very practical for retaining definition while thickening the overall sound. The bypass is a buffered bypass with trails, allowing the reverb tails and repeats to breathe when the effect is turned off.
Finally, the EXP/TAP input opens the pedal to external control: expression to control delay time or tap tempo to sync your repeats. A useful feature: program 6 repurposes the expression input to control input volume, perfect for volume swells in a "violin" style and cinematic reverb rises.
Sound
The Soft Focus Deluxe offers an immediately recognizable ambiance: a spacious and "velvety" reverb that forms a carpet rather than a simple echo, enriched with chorus-type modulation and a touch of pitch for a floating, slightly iridescent character. The delay adds the missing articulation: it brings movement, creates pulses, and highlights attacks, especially when playing open chords or arpeggios.
The built-in distortion adds a dense harmonic layer, ideal for shoegaze: it enhances presence and saturation without preventing the effect from "breathing." With parallel routing, you often get the best of both worlds: clear attack and massive depth. And if you power the pedal with 18V, you gain headroom and dynamic reserve, particularly appreciated with humbuckers, upstream boosts, or active instruments.

Questions frequently asked
What sounds does the Catalinbread Soft Focus Deluxe offer?
The six presets cover the original Soft Focus patch, a very long-tail reverb, enhanced modulation, a shimmer, a delay with octave, and a dedicated swell mode. The effects combine reverb, modulation, and pitch depending on the selected program.
Can it operate at 18 V?
The required power supply accepts 9 to 18 V DC with a negative center. Current consumption is 120 mA and battery operation is not supported. At 18 V, the dynamic headroom increases, particularly with humbuckers or a boost placed upstream.
Can the distortion be used separately from the reverb?
The Distortion footswitch allows activating the distortion independently, while the Series / Parallel switch places this effect in series with the spatial engine or on a parallel path.
How to use an expression pedal or tap tempo?
The EXP/TAP input accepts an expression pedal to control the delay time or a tap tempo to set the repetitions. In program 6, expression controls the input volume to produce swells.
What audio connections and power supply are required?
The connections include a 6.35 mm mono input and output jack, with an input impedance of 1 MOhm and an output impedance of 300 ohms. The buffered bypass with trails preserves reverb tails and repeats after deactivation.
