A "Direct" Oriented Evolution in the Microtubes Range
This V2 retains the DNA of Darkglass's modern overdrives: an articulate saturation capable of remaining clear even with high gain levels and lower tuning. The major addition compared to the first version is the enhanced speaker simulation with impulse response loading to tailor the tone to your setup (vintage-style cabinet, tight 8x10, punchier 4x10, etc.). The result: a pedal even more comfortable for DI to console, recording, or in an "ampless" pedalboard setup.
For Which Bassists and Styles?
The Microtubes B7K Ultra V2 is aimed at bassists who want a present and mix-ready sound without relying on an amp: modern rock, metal, prog, hardcore, but also funk/rock and pop whenever you want a bass that "speaks" in the mix. It suits both intermediate players seeking a simple and reliable tool (Blend, EQ, Master) and demanding bassists who fine-tune their mids to the hertz to fit between two guitars. Live, it can serve as a main preamp to the front of house; in the studio, it's an excellent source to double a mic take with a controlled DI.
Controls, Modes, and Connectivity: A True Sound Hub
The core sound is adjusted with Drive (gain) and Level, then you blend the mix with Blend to retain the attack and fundamentals of the clean signal. The Master control manages the overall level, especially useful when switching between a solid clean sound and more aggressive saturation. The active EQ consists of Bass, Lo Mids, Hi Mids, and Treble, supported by frequency selectors: Lo Mids (250 Hz / 500 Hz / 1 kHz) and Hi Mids (750 Hz / 1.5 kHz / 3 kHz) to choose the exact area to scoop, thicken, or highlight the bass.
To refine the character, the Attack and Grunt switches allow you to adjust the feel of the response (sharper, thicker, tighter), while quick-access toggles provide Cab Sim and Ground Lift for a silent XLR output. For convenience, the pedal offers a 3.5mm headphone output (with speaker simulation), a 3.5mm auxiliary input for playing along with backing tracks, a micro-USB B connection for IR management/loading, and a balanced XLR output with switchable speaker simulation.
The Sound
The pedal delivers a typically "modern" tone: firm lows, sculptable mids, and a high end that adds snap without harshness. The big advantage is clarity: even with Drive engaged, notes remain defined, and the Blend helps preserve the attack and dynamics of your playing (fingers, pick, slap). Depending on the mid settings, you can aim for a very tight and percussive sound (ideal for riffs and doubles) or a broader, more organic growl. With the Cab Sim/IR, the direct output gains coherence: less "dry" than a raw DI, closer to a miked amp signal, perfect for recording and playing on stage without a cabinet.

Questions frequently asked
Can the Darkglass Vintage Ultra V2 Aux be used without an amp?
The balanced XLR output with switchable speaker simulation allows direct connection to a mixer. Loading impulse responses adapts the cabinet simulation to the desired sound. The 3.5 mm mini-jack headphone output also includes this simulation.
Which mid frequencies are adjustable?
The equalizer offers a low-mid selector at 250 Hz, 500 Hz, or 1 kHz, and a high-mid selector at 750 Hz, 1.5 kHz, or 3 kHz.
How to keep clear lows with saturation?
The Blend knob balances the mix between processed and clean signals to preserve attack and fundamentals. The Drive and Level controls set the saturation gain and its output level, respectively.
Is it possible to play with headphones and a backing track?
A 3.5 mm auxiliary input accepts an external source, while the 3.5 mm headphone output allows monitoring.
What power supply is required for this Darkglass pedal?
A 9 V DC power supply with a 5.5 x 2.1 mm coaxial connector and negative center polarity is required. The stated current consumption is 110 mA.
