The result is direct, with a sensation of sharper or softer "contour" depending on the setting.

Two Independent Channels, Stereo Link, and Chaining: A True Toolbox

When unlinked, you can process two different sources in parallel with distinct settings. To go further, the routing also allows connecting the output of the L channel to the input of the R channel to stack processing: for example, equalize in EQ mode, then reshape the impulsive response in Dual Band.
