Essential Information About the SSL VHD Pre Mic Preamp (500 Format)

  • An Ultra-Versatile 500 Preamp: from very clean "SuperAnalogue" sound to expressive harmonic saturation thanks to the 100% analog VHD circuit.

  • Color on Demand: addition of 2nd order harmonics, 3rd order harmonics, or a blend of both depending on the VHD gain setting.

  • Ready for All Sources: switchable high-pass filter (15 Hz to 500 Hz), line PAD, phase inversion, +48V phantom power, and Hi-Z mode.

  • Simple Studio Integration: designed for 500 format racks (Lunchbox type) with an input/output level of +4 dBu.

A 500 Module in the SSL Sound Tradition: From SuperAnalogue Transparency to VHD Character

The VHD Pre was designed to naturally integrate into a modern studio environment in 500 format, while incorporating two beloved SSL signatures: a SuperAnalogue approach focused on precision, and a VHD (Variable Harmonic Drive) circuit intended to add substance without sacrificing control. Where some preamps impose a single color, this module embraces a "two-in-one" philosophy: a very clean starting point, then a gradual progression toward denser and bolder textures.

Its operation at the +4 dBu standard makes it compatible with professional processing chains, whether used before conversion, direct input into a 500 rack, or as a quality gain stage within a hybrid setup.

Who and What Uses Does the VHD Pre Excel In?

This preamp is aimed at demanding home studio users as well as production studios seeking a single module capable of covering many situations. For vocal recording, it can remain very transparent to preserve intent and dynamics, then become more present and "mix-ready" by adding just the right amount of harmonics. On a snare drum, guitar mic, or overheads, it allows shifting from a clean capture to a more aggressive and textured imprint depending on the style (rock, grunge, punk, metal, electro).

The Hi-Z mode also opens the door to convenient direct input (DI) recording for high-impedance instruments, capturing guitar or bass with a solid and usable signal. The PAD and phase inversion facilitate integration into already gain-staged chains (external preamps, line levels, multi-mic setups), and the high-pass filter helps immediately clean up vibrations, stage noise, handling sounds, or proximity effect.

VHD in Practice: Sculpting Harmonics from Subtle to "Trash"

The heart of the module is its 100% analog VHD circuit. As you increase the VHD input gain, the processing introduces second-order, third-order harmonics, or a mix of both into the signal. This approach is particularly musical: you don't just "add distortion," you choose the nature of the coloration, and thus how the source will sit in the mix.

From "Tube Grain" to Transistor Precision, Without Losing Control

At low levels, the VHD can add a subtle warmth and a sense of thickness reminiscent of certain tube circuit behaviors, or conversely a touch of transistor-like precision depending on the setting and source. Increasing the gain further raises the distortion rate proportionally, reaching extreme settings: an incisive, grunge, intentionally "trash" character if you're seeking a pronounced sonic effect.

Immediate Control for Cleaner Takes

The switchable high-pass filter (15 Hz to 500 Hz) is a key tool to maintain headroom before conversion and avoid unnecessarily saturating downstream stages with unwanted low frequencies. Add to that the +48V phantom power with LED indicator, the PAD to adapt line levels, and the phase inverter to secure multi-mic setups: the VHD Pre becomes a true Swiss Army knife for recording in 500 format.
