An Empirical Labs "de-esser" that goes far beyond the classic role
The DerrEsser comes in the API 500 format and adopts a highly effective idea: a unique active crossover filter that splits the spectrum into two bands (low frequencies and high frequencies). This approach allows triggering and applying dynamics more intelligently than a simple broadband detector, targeting the "harsh" areas while preserving the body and presence of the signal.
Where many de-essers limit themselves to reducing a sibilance range, the DerrEsser was designed as a multifunction processor: dynamic control of highs, smoothing, creative filtering, and isolated listening thanks to the Listen function. The result: a module that fits well on a lead vocal as well as on sources rich in transients or harmonics.
Who the DerrEsser is for, and when to use it in the studio

This method helps avoid the "muffled voice" effect often associated with overly broadband de-essing. The goal is to remove what exceeds, at the moment it exceeds, while respecting the overall tonal balance.
HF LIMIT Mode: high-frequency control like an HF compressor
In HF LIMIT, the DerrEsser analyzes only the overall level of high frequencies. As soon as this HF content crosses the threshold, gain is reduced, with an action designed as a smoothing of the highs. This mode can serve as a de-esser but excels especially when a more stable and less aggressive brightness is desired, for example on a very close vocal, cymbals that "sizzle," or an overly bright acoustic guitar.
The Soft Knee-type behavior favors a progressive and musical gain reduction, useful when aiming to polish rather than correct audibly.
HIGHPASS and LOWPASS Modes: exploiting the filter and Listen function
Beyond dynamic processing, the DerrEsser allows using its filtering and circuits via the Listen function. In HIGHPASS configuration, you listen to the high frequencies processed by the dynamics, with a cutoff frequency adjustable via Frequency. In LOWPASS configuration, you listen to the low frequencies (those unaffected by the VCA and dynamics), which is very practical for setting a crossover frequency, understanding what the detector "sees," and refining a setting without guesswork.
