Historical Context and Positioning Within the Range
The Calftone series is inspired by the drumheads of the era that shaped the sound of vintage recordings. With the "56" reference, Evans highlights its origins and offers a modern alternative to the "calfskin" sound: more stable, more consistent, and perfectly suited to today's studio and stage demands.
Who This Drum/Bass Drumhead Is For
This bass drumhead is aimed at drummers from beginner to advanced levels seeking a rounder, more controlled sound. It excels in jazz, blues, vintage rock, soul, funk, and any situation where limiting harmonics, thickening the low end, and achieving a softer response under the beater are desired.
Features and Innovations
Available in sizes from 16 to 26 inches, the Calftone comes in Standard, EQ4, or EMAD versions to suit different approaches to control and dynamics. Its simple 10 mil single-ply construction with an internal ring naturally reduces unwanted resonances, facilitating mic placement and speeding up tuning, even without damping accessories.
Sound Characteristics
The Calftone stands out with a softer attack, a less aggressive high end, and a more disciplined sustain. The result is a "vintage record" sound: present lows, silky texture, and controlled projection that remains clear in the mix, particularly appreciated for low tunings and felt bass drum sounds.
