An "Integrated Series" Overdrive: Free The Tone's Vision of Amp-like Drive
The Fire Mist FM-1V inaugurates the "Integrated Series" philosophy: Free The Tone launched this project to gather, in a single stompbox, all the parameters that truly influence the playing feel and musicality of a great amp channel. Here, the goal is not to stack options, but to rediscover what one expects from a great amp pushed just right: definition, responsiveness, sustain, and a lively grain. To achieve this, the brand didn't settle for a simple overdrive circuit. It worked on the enclosure, grounding, materials, noise management, and the overall coherence of the circuit. Notably, it features the HTS circuit, designed to preserve the signal in bypass mode and avoid the "thin sound" effect in a crowded pedalboard, as well as a passive tone approach crafted to remain musical throughout the entire potentiometer sweep.
Who Is the Fire Mist FM-1V For?
The FM-1V clearly targets guitarists who build their sound through playing rather than settings: from rock to hard rock, from muscular blues to 70s/80s leads, it excels when you want to go from a spacious clean to a credible drive without changing amps. It was designed to shine with humbuckers (Les Pauls and the like), while remaining very convincing with single coils when seeking a tight, articulate crunch. The ideal setup: an amp set clean with plenty of headroom. The Fire Mist then "exploits" this margin to give the impression of an added lead channel on the amp. In the studio, it easily fits into a mix thanks to its harmonic/attack balance. On stage, its level reserve and controlled noise floor make it a reliable pedal on a professional pedalboard.
Controls and Design: Efficiency Above All
Free The Tone made a deliberate choice: three controls, zero fluff. Level for output volume (and how it drives the amp input), Drive for the amount of gain and saturation, and Tone to shape presence, attack, and brightness. The result is very "amp-like": you quickly find the right balance point, and above all, you can adapt the Fire Mist to the guitar, speaker cabinet, and context without fighting against an overly surgical EQ.The pedal adopts the new chassis of the Integrated range, with a particularly refined finish and a top-mounted power input, convenient for optimizing wiring. Battery access is also designed to remain simple for everyday use, a real plus for those who alternate between rehearsals, sessions, and gigs.
Sound Character
The Fire Mist FM-1V stands out for a rare transparency in an overdrive with already generous gain: the sound thickens, densifies, gains bite, but without masking the guitar's personality. At low and medium gain, it inhabits the territory of a spacious and tight British crunch: perfect for rock rhythms à la ACDC, with that "bite" and meaty low-midrange that fills the room.Increasing the Drive shifts to a more saturated lead, rich in harmonics, with a very natural sustain feel. The Tone control is particularly expressive: it can smooth the high end for a dark, thick drive, or conversely add aggressive brightness and presence that highlights the pick attack. The strong point is the responsiveness: the pedal follows every nuance of attack and cleans up very credibly with the guitar volume, like a well-set amp channel.
There's also that impression of "not playing a pedal": even at higher gain, compression remains controlled, the low end retains its firmness, and notes keep their definition. Guitarists like Miku Kobato (Band-Maid), Ken (L'Arc-en-Ciel), and Kazuki Isogai have been seen with a Fire Mist in their setups, a good indicator of the FM-1V's decidedly professional positioning.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Fire Mist FM-1V suitable for an amp set to a clean sound?
Designed to utilize the headroom reserve of a clean amp, this overdrive delivers a British crunch at low and medium gain, then a more saturated lead tone as the Drive setting increases.
What power supply should be used with the Free The Tone Fire Mist FM-1V?
The pedal runs on 9 V powered by a 006P battery or a 9 V DC power adapter with a negative center. The current consumption is approximately 10 mA. The power input is located on the top of the enclosure.
Does the Fire Mist work with humbuckers and single coils?
With humbuckers, it targets rock, hard rock, and muscular blues tones with a dense low-midrange. Single coils provide a tight and articulate crunch.
What tone control does this overdrive offer?
The Tone control allows rolling off the highs for a darker drive or boosting brightness and pick attack.
What are the dimensions and impedances of the pedal?
Its dimensions are 98 x 120 x 51 mm, including protrusions, weighing about 640 g without accessories. Input impedance is a minimum of 1 MΩ and output load impedance is a minimum of 10 kΩ.
