A Signature Designed for the Stage: Phil X's "Backline-Proof" Approach

The PXO (Phil X Overdrive) was conceived as a true work tool: a pedal capable of saving a set when faced with an unexpected backline, while remaining easy to integrate into an already crowded pedalboard. The core idea is simple: offer a very flexible overdrive + boost pair, with switchable order, to move from a main drive to a solo push, or to a thicker, more sustained cascade. Within the J.Rockett range, the PXO positions itself as an "all-in-one" solution focused on musicality and efficiency, rather than an overdrive with an extreme character.

Who Is the J.Rockett PXO For, and In Which Styles Does It Make a Difference?

The PXO is aimed at guitarists who want a reliable drive capable of covering muscular blues, classic rock, modern rock, and all situations where you need to switch from rhythm to lead without touching the amp. It suits both intermediate musicians looking for a "central" pedal and touring guitarists who need to find their bearings on very different amplifiers.

In the studio, it is relevant for layering guitar tracks without harshness in the upper spectrum. Live, its dual footswitches and PRE/POST routing allow managing a full set: attack boost before overdrive, volume boost after overdrive, or a combination of both for longer sustain.

Controls, Routing, and Tuning Philosophy

The PXO is built around two sections: Overdrive and Boost, each with its own footswitch. On the overdrive side, there is a familiar ergonomics: Volume and Gain interact to adjust both output level and saturation structure, while the separate EQ (Bass and Treble) helps tailor the pedal to different guitars and amps without losing definition.

On the boost side, the Level control sets the output level, and the Tilt EQ acts as a very intuitive spectral balance: turning clockwise refines the lows and opens the highs; counterclockwise thickens the bottom and softens the top. The highlight remains the PRE/POST switch: in PRE, the boost pushes the overdrive for more gain and sustain; in POST, it raises the overall level after the overdrive to cut through the mix without changing the saturation amount.

Sound

The PXO stands out with a feeling of richness in the low end and smoothness in the highs that avoids the "harsh" effect on already bright amps. The tone is dynamic: it responds well to right-hand playing and encourages "digging" into the note, with an attack that remains clear and a sustain that develops naturally.

In boost-only mode, the Tilt EQ allows either controlled brightness or warm thickening, useful for making a guitar sit in a mix without pushing gain. In cascade, the whole can become denser and more singing, ideal for expressive leads, while maintaining articulation clear enough for rock rhythms.
