A 55-02 in the Spirit of the Legendary 55-94
The 55-02 follows the lineage of Lakland basses crafted for the biggest stages, adopting the approach of the USA 55-94 series: same LH3 preamp components and a philosophy clearly focused on versatility and precision. The LH3 pickups, hand-wound in the brand's Chicago workshop, are paired with an active preamp powered by a 9 V battery, easily accessible via a clip-on compartment. Inside, switches allow adjustment of the midrange boost/cut frequency to tailor the bass to your playing style and amplification.
For Whom and Which Styles?
With its long scale length and full active electronics, the Lakland 55-02 primarily targets intermediate to advanced bassists seeking a reliable, expressive 5-string capable of cutting through dense mixes. It excels in funk, rock, pop, gospel, fusion, and studio contexts, thanks to its precise controls (blend, 3-band EQ) and the option to bypass tone control via the push-pull volume knob.
Sound Character
The core tonal character comes from the combination of ash (sharp attack, firm lows, great projection) and a quilted maple top (definition, brightness, and precision), complemented by a maple neck with reinforcements for stable response and solid sustain. The MM-J configuration offers a very wide palette: a modern and powerful tone from the MM-style pickup side, and a more precise articulation from the J-style pickup side, with panoramic blend control for instant mixing. The Lakland LH3 active preamp delivers real stage "punch," while the bass / midrange / treble EQ sculpts the sound without losing clarity, especially on the B string thanks to the 35" / 889 mm scale.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
To fully exploit the 35" / 889 mm scale length, prioritize a set of 5-string long scale (35") strings. Also, keep a spare 9 V battery on hand for the active electronics to avoid any drop in output during rehearsals or on stage.
