A Mouthpiece Designed for Instrument Creation
Developed as part of educational initiatives in "wild instrument making" by the CFMI (Centre de Formation de Musiciens Intervenants) at Charles-de-Gaulle University - Lille 3, the Lugdivine mouthpiece embodies an approach that places inventiveness at the heart of musical practice. Inspired by standard cornet mouthpieces, it adopts the cup design principle to allow everyone to build, test, and play atypical instruments at low cost.
Who is it for, and for what purpose?
This mouthpiece is aimed both at beginners discovering brass instruments and at educators and workshop facilitators wishing to offer a playful and concrete approach to sound. It is well suited to group contexts (classes, school orchestras, instrument-making workshops) and adapts to various uses: sound exploration, instrument construction, initiation to embouchure placement, attack, and air control.
Sound and Design
Of the "cup" type (similar to a cornet mouthpiece), the Lugdivine promotes direct sound production and easy handling, particularly useful for first attempts. Its ABS plastic provides a pleasant feel and good resistance to repeated handling. The compact size and small-diameter shank facilitate mounting on many supports (pipes, flexible tubing, small bells), producing timbres ranging from raw and "wild" sounds to rounder colors depending on the length of the tube and the shape of the bell used.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
For instrument making, a section of tubing (PVC or flexible hose) and, if needed, a recovered bell are usually sufficient to start. In workshops, providing fastening elements (adhesive tape, hose clamps) can help stabilize the assembly depending on the materials used.
