The Mad Professor MILESTONE revisits the textures of the very first germanium fuzz pedals with a resolutely modern approach. Its inspiration comes as much from the raw, edgy and warm sounds of historic fuzz circuits as from the musical coloration of old mixing consoles. It does not seek to reproduce any particular iconic model exactly; instead, it offers a personal, expressive and refined interpretation of this sonic heritage.

It is part of Mad Professor's Handwired range, a series of pedals hand-wired in Finland. Whereas many vintage fuzz pedals need to be placed directly after the guitar, the MILESTONE uses a transformer-based circuit that makes it much easier to integrate into contemporary effects chains. This is a particularly valuable advantage for musicians who already use a buffered tuner, a wireless system or several pedals before their fuzz.

The MILESTONE is aimed at guitarists looking for a responsive fuzz that reacts to pick attack, finger dynamics and the instrument's volume. Thanks to its active EQ, it can also find a place in a bass setup: by boosting the low end, it helps maintain a solid foundation and avoid the overly thin sound that some fuzz pedals can produce.

In rehearsal, on stage or in the studio, the pedal reveals its full potential when used as a true extension of the instrument. Roll back the guitar's volume to clean up the fuzz, dig in harder to bring out the harmonics, then adjust the EQ to place it precisely in the mix.

Four controls, exemplary pedalboard integration

The Mad Professor MILESTONE favors a direct and musical interface. The Volume control sets the overall output level, allowing you to balance the pedal with your direct signal or drive the input of your amplifier. The Fuzz control adjusts the gain of the germanium circuit, from a lightly raspy texture to dense, harmonically rich saturation.

The Bass and Treble controls form a two-band shelving EQ, allowing you to boost or cut the low and high frequencies respectively. This design provides highly useful tonal range for adapting the fuzz to a bright clean amp, incisive single-coil pickups, powerful humbuckers or a bass.

The MILESTONE's true strength lies in its transformer-based circuit. Traditional germanium fuzz pedals can respond differently when a buffer or another pedal is placed before them. Here, you can experiment much more freely with the order of your effects: after a tuner, compressor, wah, overdrive or buffer, the pedal retains its character and touch sensitivity. Its true bypass switch also preserves the signal when the effect is disengaged.

The sound

The MILESTONE delivers an organic, lively and nuanced germanium fuzz. Its tone combines vintage warmth with excellent definition, offering a less rigid texture than a modern high-gain distortion. It responds immediately to changes in attack: play softly for a lightly grainy smoothness, then dig into the strings to bring out a wilder, harmonically rich bite.

The Bass control can thicken riffs, support low notes and give more body to a guitar equipped with single-coil pickups. Treble opens up the sound, enhances the presence of a solo or, conversely, tames an already very bright amplifier. This tonal flexibility makes the MILESTONE easier to integrate into a mix than many vintage models with a fixed voice.

With a clean amp, it produces broad, textured and expressive saturation. In front of an already driven amp, it can enhance sustain, thicken the mids and add a particularly effective roughness for rock riffs. Above all, the MILESTONE preserves the direct connection between your hands and your sound that makes an excellent germanium fuzz so compelling.
