A boutique overdrive designed for transparency (available in Handwired series)
The Royal Blue Overdrive was created with a simple idea: to preserve the personality of your instrument and amp while adding musical, progressive, and controllable saturation. Its intentionally limited filtering promotes an "amp-like" feel: you keep the attack, harmonics, and definition, then shape the tonal balance via Bass and Treble.
The HW (Handwired) version takes craftsmanship even further: meticulous assembly, through-hole components, and selection of parts known for their reliability. The result is a pedal built to last and become a fixed point on your pedalboard, both in the studio and on stage.
Who is the Royal Blue Overdrive HW for?
This overdrive suits both the demanding guitarist looking for a "always-on" drive foundation and the gigging musician wanting a responsive pedal to switch from clean to crunch simply using the pick and guitar volume knob. It fits very well intermediate to professional levels while remaining immediate to dial in.
In terms of styles, it naturally fits blues, blues-rock, rock, funk/soul, modern country, pop... and broadly anywhere saturation is desired without losing chord clarity. For live setups, its top-mounted jacks facilitate integration on a compact pedalboard.
Controls, design, and strengths in use
The Royal Blue Overdrive HW goes straight to the point with four controls, calibrated to be musical across their entire range. Volume adjusts the overall output level: perfect for matching bypass level or boosting the signal for solos. Drive adjusts the grit from light saturation to more pronounced distortion, while maintaining a very "touch sensitive" response.
Bass and Treble controls are shelving boost/cut EQs : you can tighten the lows for tighter rhythms or beef up the bass of a thin combo. The same logic applies to the highs: add air and attack or soften a bright amp without losing presence. The pedal also features true bypass to preserve signal integrity when off, and protected power input against reverse polarity.
The sound
The Royal Blue's signature is a transparency that respects your guitar's character: attacks remain clear, chords stay defined, and the pedal avoids excessive compression that can "flatten" your playing. It particularly shines in registers where you want to hear the picking hand: the harder you play, the more the saturation opens up, and lowering the guitar volume cleans the tone naturally.
In practice, it excels as a main overdrive on a clean channel, as a boost/EQ in front of a slightly crunchy amp, or to stack a second saturation (before or after) to increase sustain without muddying the mix. Guitarists like Matt Schofield, Warner Hodges, Thor Jensen, and Kristofer Steen have been associated with this overdrive, proving its place in rigs focused on dynamics and feel.

Questions frequently asked
What kind of sound does this overdrive offer for an already clean amp?
The analog circuit favors progressive saturation that preserves the attack and clarity of chords. The Bass and Treble controls are shelving boost/cut types, allowing separate adjustment of lows and highs.
What power supply is required for the pedal?
The required power supply is 9 V DC, with an operating range from 7.5 to 12 V, a 2.1 mm center-negative connector, and a consumption of about 3.5 mA at 9 V.
Are the jacks practical for a compact pedalboard?
The 6.35 mm input and output jacks are mounted on the top of the enclosure. This layout limits lateral space on the pedalboard. The enclosure measures 12.9 x 6.5 x 6 cm.
Is the Mad Professor Royal Blue Overdrive HW hand-built?
The Handwired construction uses through-hole components. The potentiometers and switches are Alpha branded, while the jacks are Switchcraft. The design and manufacturing are done in Finland.
Can it be used as a boost for solos?
Thanks to the Volume control, the output level can be raised to push an amp that is already slightly crunchy. The Drive control covers mild saturation up to more pronounced distortion, with a click footswitch to activate the effect.
