A Next-Generation 8pre, on Par with the Brand's Premium Interfaces

The MOTU 8pre-es continues the brand's line of AVB studio interfaces with a clear ambition: to offer a rackmount interface focused on multichannel recording while maintaining audio quality worthy of higher-end configurations. It claims the same audio quality as the 1248 and stands out with a new dual LCD screen design, designed to improve readability in daily use. The goal is simple: to see signal activity at a glance, quickly access hardware settings, and work faster without unnecessary navigation.

Intended Uses and Studios

With its 8 mic inputs and numerous expansion options, the 8pre-es targets both the demanding home studio and production studios, live recording, and hybrid setups (tracking + reamping + external summing). It is particularly relevant if you record drums, bands, vocal ensembles, or want to centralize your mic inputs while keeping room for growth via optical connections and the AVB ecosystem.

The presence of two front-panel headphone outputs simplifies sessions with two people (engineer + artist), while the talkback section facilitates communication in the booth. And if you work on the go, iPad compatibility via a camera connection kit adapter allows for a compact setup for editing, preproduction, or mobile recording.

Conversion, Latency, and Control: An Interface Designed for the Pace of Sessions

Clean Microphone Preamps and Remote Control

The 8 mic inputs are designed to remain neutral and quiet, with an EIN rated at 129 dBu: a real advantage when using dynamic or ribbon microphones (with suitable preamp), or when capturing low-level sources. Each input is remotely controllable (gain, pad, 48 V), convenient for managing a recording from the control room or quickly adjusting without interrupting a session.

High-End Converters and Reliable Monitoring

Conversion is a key point of this interface: 118 dB dynamic range and integration of an ESS Sabre32 DAC for detailed rendering, solid dynamics, and monitoring that helps make good decisions (balance, EQ, dynamics). This quality is especially useful during editing, mixing, and mastering when precision on transients and depth of field makes the difference.

MOTU Drivers and Comfortable Recording Latency

The 8pre-es is designed to offer ultra-low latency, with RTL performance up to 1.6 ms at 96 kHz via Thunderbolt under optimized conditions. This translates into better playing and singing comfort, especially for recording vocals, guitars, and virtual keyboards, where the sensation of "immediate feedback" is crucial.

Dual LCD Screens and Quick Access to Settings

The new dual LCD screen design improves readability: levels, signal activity, and essential information remain visible, and hardware settings are accessible through a simple menu. The result: fewer back-and-forths and a more intuitive interface to operate in the heat of a session.

DSP Mixing, Effects, and Integrated Talkback

For headphone monitoring and monitor mixes, the 8pre-es includes DSP mixing and effects processing to build comfortable listening environments without overloading the computer. The integrated talkback microphone and front-panel "talk" button speed up communication, while the A/B speaker selection facilitates quick comparisons between two pairs of monitors.

AVB Network: System Control and Expansion

The interface can be controlled via a web application software adapted for mobile devices, usable on laptops, tablets, and smartphones connected to the local Wi-Fi network. Regarding scalability, you can add a second MOTU AVB interface via a simple CAT-5e Ethernet cable, or connect up to five interfaces using a compatible AVB switch (sold separately). This approach is ideal for expanding input/output counts, distributing audio across multiple rooms, or building a modular recording rig.
