A Modern Classic in the Series 180

Spiritually descended from the legendary KM 84, the KM 184 is at the heart of Neumann's Series 180 fixed capsule microphones (alongside the KM 183 and KM 185). It carries forward the neutrality DNA that has built the brand's reputation, while modernizing the electronics and ergonomics to meet today's studio and stage demands.

Who Is It For and What Are Its Uses?

Designed for demanding sound engineers, producers, and recordists, the KM 184 excels on acoustic instruments: piano, guitar, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and drums. Its discreet size makes it an ally for TV/radio recording. In pairs, it shines in XY, ORTF, or NOS configurations for coherent stereo, suitable for ensembles as well as soloists. It can also be used for classical vocals when authenticity is paramount.

What Makes the Difference in Studio and on Stage

Its smooth and linear frequency response features a slight boost around 9 kHz to add brilliance without harshness. The frequency-independent cardioid ensures exemplary rear rejection down to low frequencies, limiting off-axis coloration and facilitating placement in complex environments.

The transformerless output circuit guarantees minimal noise, very low distortion, and optimal compatibility with long mic lines. Powered by P48 phantom power, the KM 184 preserves the capsule's sonic integrity, delivering fast transients, a stable image, and precision that make it a versatile reference from classical music to heavy metal.
