A Heritage Inspired by the Legendary M 50, Modernized for Today's Studio

The M 150 adopts a now-legendary architecture: a small capsule embedded in a sphere, protected by a very open head grille, with a profile reminiscent of the M 50. This approach is not merely aesthetic: the sphere naturally shapes the directivity, maintaining an omnidirectional base while adding more focus in the high frequencies. The result is a stable, deep, and "readable" image, especially appreciated when capturing room acoustics, classical ensembles, or ambient recordings that remain precise.

Where historical designs could introduce a more pronounced signature, the M 150 embraces a decidedly modern philosophy: controlled self-noise, high dynamic range, and ultra-clean transmission. It retains the character and finesse expected from a tube microphone while meeting the demands of modern workflows (resolution, transients, headroom, and long cable runs).

Who the M 150 Is For and Where It Excels

The Neumann M 150 is designed for sound engineers and studios seeking a high-end tube microphone capable of capturing a source and its space with great fidelity. In classical recording, it is particularly convincing as an orchestra mic, ensemble mic, room mic, or for stereo and multi-mic setups where image coherence is crucial. In contemporary music studios, it adds a very "large" dimension on drum overheads, percussion, piano, strings, or booth ambiance recordings.

Its ability to remain clean at high levels, combined with clear lows and comfortable dynamics, also makes it an excellent choice when avoiding compression or unwanted coloration is important. It is a mic that enhances good acoustics but remains usable even when securing the low end with its dedicated filter.

Transducer and Electronics Designed for Transparency and Impact

Titanium Capsule and Transient Response

The M 150's condenser transducer features a titanium diaphragm, a metal that is both lightweight and rigid. With a gap of only 10 microns between the diaphragm and the rear plate (also titanium), the capsule gains speed and control. This design promotes a very fast transient response: crisper string attacks, more credible percussion articulation, and a sense of "presence" without artificial harshness.

40 mm Acoustic Sphere: Omni That Focuses in the High Frequencies

The capsule is a pressure transducer (omnidirectional by nature), but the sphere progressively modifies the behavior at high frequencies to add more directionality. In practice, this helps retain the breadth of an omni capture while gaining precision on details and source localization. This is a highly sought-after balance for ensemble recordings where you want both air, depth, and a stable image.

Selected Tube, Low Self-Noise, and Transformerless Output

The capsule's signal is amplified by a tube circuit using a subminiature triode, selected for optimal transmission characteristics and a self-noise of only 15 dB-A. Unlike some older designs, the M 150 does not use an output transformer: the transformerless output stage aims for ultra-transparent reproduction, with clear lows even at high levels and a wide dynamic range (119 dB). Another practical benefit in studio and remote recording: this modern stage allows the use of cables up to 300 m without transmission losses, convenient for large rooms, distant control rooms, or fixed installations.

Useful Switches: Pad and "Intelligent" High-Pass Filter

The -10 dB switch allows output attenuation to work comfortably with preamps that have limited headroom. A second switch activates a noise-cutting filter at 40 Hz. An interesting feature: in the LIN position, the high-pass filter is not fully disabled but shifts to 16 Hz to protect the console input from background noise, as the capsule's low-frequency response is practically unlimited. This approach helps maintain a sense of foundation while avoiding unnecessary sub-bass that consumes headroom.
