A staple in the RODE range for precision sound capture

The RODE NT55 belongs to the line of studio microphones designed for accuracy rather than emphasis. Its small diaphragm design aims for faithful, fast, and nuanced reproduction, particularly appreciated when it comes to capturing the attack of an instrument and the dynamics of a performance. Within the range, it stands out for its "studio" flexibility thanks to its two interchangeable capsules and built-in controls, making it a very reliable choice for building a coherent mic collection, from home studios to production studios.

Who it's for and its uses in studio or live settings

The NT55 is aimed at musicians, sound engineers, and creators who want a microphone capable of handling a wide variety of sessions without losing definition. On an acoustic guitar, it helps recover the brightness of the pick and the breath of the wood without harshness. As drum overheads, its extended response and particularly stable cardioid pattern facilitate stereo imaging and cymbal clarity. On piano, strings, percussion, or ambience, the omnidirectional capsule offers freer placement options while maintaining a natural sound and excellent spatial coherence.

Thanks to its high SPL handling, it is also suitable for loud sources (brass, close percussion, auxiliary snare) provided placement is adapted and the pad is used when necessary. It is also an excellent candidate for stereo pair recordings (XY, ORTF, AB depending on capsule) to create credible and easy-to-mix stereo recordings.

Key features and on-the-fly flexibility

Two capsules to adapt the polar pattern to your session

The NT55 comes with two capsules: a cardioid to isolate the source, control bleed, and secure recordings in imperfect environments, and an omnidirectional to capture more air, depth, and a more even room response. This versatility allows switching from a close and controlled capture to a more "natural" approach without changing microphones, simply by choosing the capsule best suited to the context.

Pad and high-pass filter: a real time saver at mixdown

The three-position pad (0, -10 dB, -20 dB) helps maintain headroom on powerful sources and avoid saturating the input stage of your audio interface or preamp. The three-stage high-pass filter (flat, 75 Hz, 150 Hz) is equally useful for reducing vibrations, handling noise, ventilation hum, or proximity effect, while lightening the low end before conversion. The result: cleaner, more usable takes, and a mix that starts on better foundations.

Detailed reproduction, serving acoustic instruments

With its 1/2-inch gold-sputtered condenser capsule and extended frequency response, the NT55 aims for a smooth and balanced sound while retaining the definition expected from a small diaphragm mic. It excels at translating fine nuances, micro-dynamics, and precise articulation, whether for guitars, strings, overheads, or cymbals. Its very low self-noise enhances the sense of "blackness" around the signal, appreciated on delicate takes and pianissimo passages.
