An Iconic Delay Redesigned for the "MX" Era
The TimeLine has long been an absolute reference on pro pedalboards: organic "tape" repeats, ultra-clear digital delays, and that immediate control feel that makes you want to play more than program. With the TimeLine MX, Strymon didn't just give it a facelift: the pedal is rebuilt around a new platform and, above all, a much more flexible "machines" approach. The result: the classics (dTape, dBucket, Digital, Reverse, Ice, Lo Fi, Filter) return refined, and new sonic territories open up with Drum, Oil Can, MultiTap, Spectral, and a Reverb inspired by the Flint spirit. For Which Musician, Styles, and Situations?
The TimeLine MX is aimed at those who want a premium stereo delay capable of covering everything: from subtle slapback to surgical "dotted eighth" rhythms, thick analog repeats to ambient pads that fill the space. On stage, the OLED screen and preset navigation make life easier, while the Dual mode allows building complex sounds without multiplying pedals. But it's also a formidable tool beyond guitar: thanks to the selectable instrument or line input level, the TimeLine MX naturally integrates with synths, stage keyboards, drum machines, or console outputs. In the studio, its wet/dry/wet routing, insert loop, and MIDI make it a creative, clean, and perfectly controllable delay processor.
Controls, Modes, and Connectivity: A "Workstation" in Pedal Format
The ergonomics remain very "player-friendly": nine knobs for quick access to essential settings, with functions that intelligently adapt depending on the chosen machine (grain, modulation, filter, character, etc.). The three footswitches handle bank navigation, tap tempo, sustain/infinite repeats functions, and looper access, with the possibility to use the 1 Button Looper mode without switching to a separate mode. The core concept is the Dual: you combine two engines of your choice, then select series routing (to stack and sculpt), parallel (to widen and maintain clarity), or split (one engine left, the other right). Each engine can also be panned, making the stereo truly "composable" and not just wide.
On the integration side, everything is designed for pros: MIDI via DIN, TRS, or USB-C, USB-C for updates and compatibility with a future editor, and an assignable stereo effects loop (normal, wet/dry, or wet/dry/wet configuration). Finally, bypass is customizable: true bypass via relay or selectable buffer.
Sound
What stands out with the TimeLine MX is the balance between studio finesse and musical response. Repeats remain detailed even when the mix is loaded, and the dynamics follow the touch: sharp attack for rhythmic patterns, natural fade for ambient textures. The dry path is 100 percent analog, guaranteeing a direct signal with zero latency, while effects unfold around cleanly, without "shaving" your tone. The historic machines are more alive than ever: dTape excels in warm echo with its tape behaviors, dBucket brings that typical "bucket brigade" roundness, and Digital can shift from a very hi-fi modern delay to more vintage colors. The new ones change the palette: Spectral opens granular and textured worlds, MultiTap builds hypnotic rhythmic architectures, Drum adds ultra-inspiring mechanical instability, and the built-in Reverb finally allows building a complete delay + space preset without adding anything else on the board.

Questions frequently asked
Can the Strymon TimeLine MX use two delays at the same time?
The Dual mode combines two engines from the 12 available machines. The routing can be set in series, parallel, or left/right split, with independent panning for each engine.
What looper is integrated into this pedal?
A stereo looper with a maximum duration of 5 minutes is integrated. Multi and 1 Button modes are available, the latter allowing the use of the looper without changing from the dedicated mode.
Can it be connected to a synthesizer or a mixing console?
The input level is selectable between instrument and line, with a maximum input level of 10 dBu. The stereo TRS jacks offer normal, mono or stereo effects loop, wet/dry, and wet/dry/wet configurations.
Which delay and ambiance machines are offered?
Twelve machines are available: dTape, dBucket, Digital, Drum, Oil Can, MultiTap, Spectral, Reverse, Ice, Lo Fi, Filter, and Reverb. The Reverb machine allows integrating reverb directly into the preset.
How to control the TimeLine MX via MIDI?
MIDI control is accessible through the DIN MIDI IN/OUT jacks and the USB-C. Preset changes via Program Change and parameter adjustments via CC are supported, while USB-C is also used for firmware updates.
