What you need to know
What you need to know
- Stereo multi-effects focused on sound design: chorus, delay, grain (granular), and reverb combined in a single pedal.
- Creative series/parallel architecture to stack textures (effects feeding each other) or blend them (independent effects) depending on your pedalboard.
- Inspired by Yvette Young's approach: ideal for expansive atmospheres, evolving pads, "glitchy" effects, and cinematic transitions.
- Modern control: presets, MIDI via 3.5mm TRS mini-jacks, and USB-C port for updates.

A Collaboration Designed as a Full Instrument
The Qi Etherealizer (pronounced "chee ethereal-izer") was born from a collaboration with Yvette Young, whose fingerstyle playing and modern songwriting have greatly contributed to popularizing clear, dynamic, and highly textured sounds. Here, the idea is not to replicate a specific vintage effect but to offer an atmospheric playground where chorus, delay, grains, and reverb become full compositional elements.
Its name, borrowed from the concept of "vital energy," perfectly sums up the intention: to create living, moving layers capable of shifting from an intimate room to a vast dreamlike landscape, with organic details and controlled accidents.
Who Is the Qi Etherealizer For, and In Which Styles Does It Excel?
The Qi targets guitarists (and more broadly instrumentalists) who enjoy sculpting atmospheres and building arrangements from textures: math rock, post-rock, ambient, indie, prog, modern pop, film music, as well as worship and organic electronic. It's a very inspiring pedal for those who work on nuanced playing, percussive attacks, clear arpeggios, and open harmonies.
In the studio, it becomes a source of stereo layers and subtle movements to thicken a take without overpowering it. Live, the series/parallel routing, momentary functions, and presets allow you to switch quickly between soundscapes while maintaining sonic coherence on your pedalboard.
Key Features: Routing, Modes, Control, and Creativity
The heart of the Qi Etherealizer is its way of combining effect blocks. In series mode, chorus, delay, and grain can feed into each other: perfect for textures that evolve over repeats. In parallel mode, each effect retains its identity, letting you build a clearer mix, ideal when you want clean, controlled stereo depth.
The chorus offers Tri Chorus and Stereo Chorus modes, designed to add width, movement, and a "liquid" feel without taking over the entire sound. The delay is a clean digital delay capable of up to 2 seconds: long enough for spacious echoes, rhythmic patterns, or transition tails.
The granular section opens the door to musical accidents: in Grain Cloud, random grains create a "glitch" veil whose density is controlled via the X knob; in Phrase Sample, grains lock onto your playing peaks to generate more rhythmic repetitions, with adjustable tempo. Add to this locking and momentary functions (including Grain-Freeze and delay oscillation) to freeze a pad, trigger a build-up, or accentuate a passage with a gesture.
Finally, the whole system is built around a new MDSP chip exclusive to Walrus Audio, designed for high headroom, enhanced audio quality, and optimized signal-to-noise ratio, with modern connectivity (MIDI and USB-C) that facilitates integration into contemporary rigs.
The Sound
The Qi Etherealizer stands out with a wide, detailed, and very stereo aesthetic: the chorus adds width and depth, the delay remains precise and bright, while the granular effect adds a "magical" dimension between controlled glitch and harmonic dust. The reverb (controlled by Space) can range from a short, enveloping ambiance to very airy tails, ideal for intros, interludes, and phrase endings.
The Tone control acts like a synthesizer-style low-pass filter, useful for softening highs, pushing the effect back in the mix, or conversely achieving a more muffled and cinematic sound. The result: a pedal that responds well to touch, encourages expressive playing, and easily transforms a simple part into an evolving soundscape.

Questions frequently asked
Does the Walrus Audio Qi Etherealizer offer a long delay?
The digital delay goes up to 2 seconds, allowing for spaced echoes and rhythmic patterns. An oscillation function, usable in latch or momentary mode, is also included.
How do the series and parallel modes work?
In series mode, the chorus, delay, and grain feed into each other sequentially to create evolving textures. Parallel mode keeps the effects independent and allows for a more distinct mix balance.
What granular modes are available?
The Grain Cloud function generates random grains, with density controlled by the X knob. The Phrase Sample mode triggers on playing peaks and produces rhythmic repeats with adjustable tempo. Five playback types are offered: Normal, double speed at +1 octave, half speed at -1 octave, Reverse, and Random.
What MIDI connectivity does this pedal have?
Two MIDI ports in 3.5 mm TRS mini-jack format are available: one IN input and one THRU output. The pedal also includes a USB-C connection.
What playing styles suit the Qi Etherealizer?
This pedal fits math rock, post-rock, ambient, indie, or modern pop approaches, especially with clear arpeggios and percussive attacks. Its two modes, Tri Chorus and Stereo Chorus, add width and movement to textures.
