An optical compressor in the tradition of classic "studio" units
The Ampeg Opto Comp relies on an optical cell, an approach known for its more gradual response compared to some VCA compressors: the result is often more "organic," less aggressive, and particularly flattering for fingerstyle, pick, or slap playing. Within the Ampeg range, it is positioned as a dynamic tool that is easy to use, designed to respect the character of the instrument while providing consistency, sustain, and playing comfort.
For whom, which styles, and in what contexts?
This pedal is aimed at both bassists and guitarists who want to stabilize their level without losing the feel under their fingers. It excels for funk (more even slap), rock and indie (better-controlled attacks), pop (notes that stay put in the mix), as well as in ambient and studio settings for more consistent takes. On a pedalboard, place it at the beginning of the chain to tame dynamic variations, or before an overdrive/fuzz for a more consistent saturation.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Ampeg Opto Comp suitable for an active bass?
The -15 dB input pad allows the pedal to be adapted to instruments with a high output level. The input impedance then changes from 1 MΩ to 166 kΩ to prevent premature compression.
What sound does an optical compressor provide for bass?
The optical cell offers a gradual response designed to smooth out peaks and stabilize sustain. The low end gains control, with a less aggressive dynamic.
What controls are available on this pedal?
Three knobs control the amount of Compression, Release time, and Output Level. A gain reduction LED displays the compressor's action in real time. The output gain can reach +14 dB.
Can it operate on a 9V battery?
A 9V DC power supply with center negative is required, drawing 25 mA. Operation on a 9V battery is also possible, but the battery is not included.
What connectivity and size should be expected for a pedalboard?
Inputs and outputs use 6.35 mm jacks, with a 200 Ω output impedance. The metal chassis measures 56 x 66 x 114 mm and weighs 0.3 kg. True bypass is controlled by an On/Off footswitch.
