A deeper successor to the Perseus concept: synth-style octave-down, but controllable
The Perseus Dio builds on the idea that made the original Catalinbread Perseus charming: blending an analog lower octave with a "fuzz/drive" signal to achieve massive riffs and an immediate synth vibe. Where the Dio goes further is in the sculpting of the octaves : each octave voice (-1 and -2) has its own low-pass filter. The result: you're not just adding low end; you decide whether your octaves are aggressive, square, and rich in harmonics, or conversely smoother, more "sub," and more musical.
Who is the Perseus Dio for, and in which styles does it make a difference?
The Catalinbread Perseus Dio is aimed at guitarists (and bassists) who want to expand their spectrum without creating a complicated setup: everything is at your fingertips, and the effect is built by playing with levels and filters. It is especially inspiring for styles where the low end must exist "as an instrument in its own right": stoner, doom, alternative rock, modern metal, but also synthwave, electro-rock, and any situation where pixelated textures, retro console-style leads, or pseudo-bass lines on guitar are desired.
In the studio, the Perseus Dio serves as a creative toolbox to double a riff, thicken a single-note part, or create deep arrangements without changing instruments. Live, it becomes a riff engine : once your balances are found, you get an imposing sound that fills the space while maintaining clear articulation.
Controls and operation: 3-voice mix + independent octave filters
The Perseus Dio is based on a simple and highly effective principle: you blend three signals, then shape the octave textures with two filters. Down 1 adjusts the level of the first lower octave, while Filter 1 sets the cutoff of its associated low-pass filter: open filter yields a rich, square, and very harmonic voice; closed filter softens it toward a purer, rounder octave. The same logic applies to Down 2 and Filter 2, which control the double lower octave to provide huge foundations, drones, or synth-bass effects.
The Dry control does more than just raise your original signal: it adds a light saturation with boost, very useful for adding attack, enhancing sustain, and helping the mix "hold together" when adding lots of octave. Used alone, the Dry section can also serve as a granular little boost to push an amp's input or thicken an already crunchy tone.
Regarding integration, it maintains a pedalboard-friendly approach: mono in / mono out, no MIDI, no stereo, no tap tempo. The idea is immediacy: you play, turn a filter, and the character changes instantly.
The sound
The Perseus Dio is a pedal that knows how to be dual: dirty and "8-bit" when the filters are open, and deep, smooth, almost "sub" when the low-pass filters are gradually closed. With two octave voices available, you can build a very wide sound: a -1 octave for body, a -2 octave for depth, and Dry for attack and presence. It's precisely this mix that gives the "synth" sensation: a massive low end, a harmonic texture that can become square and retro, and a direct signal that keeps dynamic control.
The response to playing is very expressive: by adjusting the Down / Filter pair, you move from a deliberate special effect (vintage console style) to a more discreet low-end reinforcement, ideal for thickening a riff without masking the rest of the band. It's also an excellent pedal for experimenting with guitar volume, pickups, and right-hand attack: the more you play with these parameters, the more the Dio reveals nuances of grain and density.

Questions frequently asked
How to adjust the low octaves and the synth side?
The Down 1 and Down 2 levels control the voices at -1 and -2 octaves respectively. Each voice has its own dedicated low-pass filter: Filter 1 or Filter 2 allows to darken or bring out more harmonics.
Is this octave pedal suitable for bass?
The usage is described for electric guitar and bassists seeking deep foundations. The Down 2 voice goes down two octaves, while Down 1 provides a lower octave closer to the original signal.
What power supply is needed for the Perseus Dio?
A 9 V DC power supply with negative center is required, with a current consumption of 16 mA; battery operation is not planned.
Is the connectivity stereo or MIDI?
The input and output each use a mono 6.35 mm jack. No stereo or MIDI operation is indicated. The jacks are not positioned on the top of the unit.
What is the purpose of the Dry control on this octaver?
The Dry control adjusts the dry signal, to which a slight saturation effect and boost are applied. This section can be used alone to drive an amplifier input or to thicken a crunch tone.
