An XL "Canyon": EHX's Ambition for Modern Delay

With the Grand Canyon, Electro-Harmonix pushes the concept of a delay pedal capable of covering multiple sonic "schools": precise digital echoes, textures inspired by analog units, creative effects (reverse, pitch, shimmer), and a more rhythmic approach via multi-tap and subdivisions. The goal is clear: to offer a versatile, musical, and immediately usable tool without multiplying dedicated pedals.

Its size and ergonomics place it at the heart of a modern pedalboard: direct enough for "plug and play" use, yet deep enough to craft signature sounds and recall them instantly via presets.

Who Is the Grand Canyon For, and In What Contexts Does It Make a Difference?

The Grand Canyon is aimed both at guitarists seeking a reliable main delay and musicians looking for a creative station for ambient, post-rock, indie, pop, modern blues, rock, and even more experimental contexts. Keyboards, basses, and electro-acoustic instruments also benefit thanks to stereo and the wide palette of textures.

In live settings, its 13 presets facilitate song changes without fiddling with settings. In the studio, the variety of algorithms and the ability to precisely dial in mix and repeats make it an effective pedal for quickly adding professional depth. For practice or one-man band setups, the looper becomes a true work partner.

Features and Control: From Delay to Looper Without Losing the Thread

The Grand Canyon combines a multifunction delay and a looper, with a workflow designed to chain ideas: you can work on delay effects, then record and layer loops that incorporate the pedal's effects. The looper offers a comprehensive approach with unlimited overdubs, undo/redo, dedicated stop, fade-out, reverse, and speed adjustments, far beyond the typical "looper bonus" found on many delays.

For tempo play, the tap tempo and 9 division settings allow you to go from dotted eighth notes to tighter figures, ideal for locking a riff or creating a stereo rhythmic pattern. The programmable expression pedal (EXP) controls add highly musical foot control: you can evolve multiple parameters with one movement (for example, lengthening delay time while increasing feedback) for smooth transitions.

Finally, the analog bypass and soft switching preserve the feel under your fingers, while the tails function lets you choose between a hard stop (useful for precise breaks) and a delay tail that naturally blends into the mix.

Sound

The Grand Canyon stands out with a clear and defined reproduction when you want a "clean" delay, but it can also color itself for more organic sensations: rounder repeats, modulation, tape-like textures, and thick atmospheres thanks to pitch/shimmer modes. The dynamics remain very usable: by finely adjusting feedback and effect level, you can go from simple thickening to layers that fill the space, with excellent responsiveness to right-hand playing and guitar volume variations.
