Miniature Clip Mic: Neumann's vision for live instrumental sound capture
With the MCM (Miniature Clip Mic) system, Neumann applies its studio standards to sound reinforcement and close miking. The goal is clear: to achieve a realistic, consistent sound from mic to mic, and an easy-to-repeat setup from one performance to another. The SET WOODWINDS follows this logic by offering a coherent pack for woodwind instruments (and more broadly for similar acoustic instruments), gathering the essential system elements in a modular format that is easy to transport and maintain over time.
For which musicians and situations?
The Neumann MCM SET WOODWINDS is designed for instrumentalists and sound engineers seeking a high-end miniature microphone solution for oboe, clarinet, flute, recorder, harp, or bassoon. It is perfectly suited for amplified concerts, TV studios, orchestra pits, amplified chamber music ensembles, and any situation where proximity and placement stability are critical. The clip + gooseneck format allows great freedom of movement while limiting timbre variations caused by movement relative to the microphone.
A miniature capsule, a great idea: precision, consistency, robustness
The heart of the pack is the cardioid KK 14 capsule. Neumann developed it to overcome the usual limitations associated with miniature electret capsules: more body in the low and midrange, transparent highs, and above all a neutral and consistent signature. This consistency is valuable when multiple microphones are used simultaneously (for example in an ensemble), as it simplifies equalization and speeds up balance adjustments.
Comfortable dynamic range, from pianissimo to fortissimo
With a very low self-noise and a very high maximum SPL, the KK 14 adapts equally well to delicate nuances and very strong passages. This makes it a versatile solution for wind instruments capable of wide dynamic ranges, as well as for acoustic sources that can be very present at close distance.
Quick mounting and precise placement
The system focuses on reliable mounting: the SH 150 gooseneck facilitates positioning and allows precise adjustment, while the MC 5 clip is adapted to the target instruments of the set. The whole is designed to be practical on stage, with quick setup and stable hold, even under the demanding conditions of a tour. The WS 110 windscreen helps control air turbulence and breath noise, and the KC 1 cable tie contributes to a clean and secure installation.
High-end output and easy integration
This pack includes the MCM 100 output stage for professional wired use, as well as the AC 31 cable. The MCM system is also designed to integrate into many environments, notably through interchangeable wiring options for connection to wireless transmitters, depending on stage configurations.

Questions frequently asked
Which instruments are compatible with the Neumann MCM 114 Set Woodwinds?
The MC 5 clip included in this set is designed for oboe, clarinet, flute, recorder, harp, and bassoon. The SH 150 goose-neck allows precise positioning of the capsule according to the instrument.
Is the output compatible with a mixing console?
The MCM 100 output stage and the AC 31 cable ensure an XLR connection. A 48 V ± 4 V P48 phantom power supply is required, with a current consumption of 3.5 mA.
What polar pattern does the KK 14 capsule offer?
The KK 14 electret capsule has a cardioid polar pattern and a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
Can the microphone handle very loud wind instruments?
With a maximum SPL of 153 dB SPL for harmonic distortion below 0.5%, the capsule is designed to withstand high sound pressure levels. Its equivalent noise level is 23 dBA weighted A. The cardioid pattern helps to favor the source placed in front of the microphone.
What accessories are included in the woodwinds set?
The set includes the KK 14 capsule, MC 5 clip, SH 150 goose-neck, WS 110 windshield, and KC 1 cable clip. An AC 31 cable, MCM 100 output stage, and a soft case are also provided.
