A "wide cardioid" reference that has become a recording classic

The MK 21 was designed to combine the strengths of two worlds: the openness and sense of space of an omnidirectional capsule, and the ability of a directional model to better highlight the source. Over the years, it has established itself as a recurring choice in the toolkit of many sound engineers, especially when subtle directivity and natural timbre are priorities.

For which recordings is the MK 21 most relevant?

This microphone capsule is intended for uses where one wants to maintain a beautiful openness while slightly limiting the room ambiance. It is very suitable for acoustic instruments, ensembles, overheads that need to remain soft, or situations where the room contributes to the sound without overpowering it. Thanks to a less pronounced proximity effect than a cardioid, it also facilitates close placements without excessive bass, speeding up mixing work.

A capsule designed for coherence and precision, even in the ultra-high frequencies

Wide cardioid: stable image and cleaner side reflections

The wide polar pattern of the MK 21 remains homogeneous across the entire frequency range, which helps preserve timbre when the source moves slightly or when the acoustics send reflections from the sides. Result: fewer surprises in the high spectrum and a realism often appreciated in demanding recordings.

Extended frequency response with compatible electronics

Depending on the microphone amplifier used, the frequency response varies: with CMC 6 or CMR, the capsule already reaches very high frequencies, and with CMC 6xt the bandwidth extends up to 44 kHz. A real advantage for high-resolution capture, transients, and fine harmonics, while maintaining the warm and natural signature that makes it renowned.
