Essential Information About the Marcus Miller V7 Alder 5 LH New Gen TS Bass

  • Flagship model designed to capture the "Jazz Type" DNA associated with Marcus Miller's playing, featuring a fast response and an immediately familiar groove.

  • North American alder body: balance, impact in the low mids, and excellent clarity in a band setting.

  • Highly versatile electronics: full controls and passive mode via push/pull to switch from a modern sound to a more vintage tone.

  • Left-handed 5-string version: left-hand playing comfort, with a B string to extend the range without changing your habits.

A "New Gen" V7: the core of the range, between Jazz tradition and modernity

Presented as the flagship model of the brand, the V7 follows the lineage of "Jazz Type" basses made famous by Marcus Miller: familiar ergonomics, a punchy sound, and great adaptability for both stage and studio. This Alder-5 LH New Gen version retains the classic spirit (format, balance, accessibility) while adding decidedly modern choices: dedicated pickups, Marcus Miller Modern-S bridge, and Marcus Heritage-3 preamp. The result: a bass designed to cover a wide range without losing the bite and precision expected from this type of instrument.

Who is it for? A 5-string tailored for stage, studio, and versatile bassists

The Marcus Miller V7 Alder 5 LH New Gen TS targets intermediate to advanced bassists who want a 5-string capable of handling all contexts: rehearsals, concerts, recording, home studio, and gigs requiring an extensive palette of sounds. The B string offers real musical comfort for modern styles (gospel, RnB, current pop), but it is equally useful in funk and jazz when you want to enrich harmony or play lower lines without shifting position.

Its "Jazz Type" format and comprehensive electronics make it particularly comfortable for slap (clear attack, dynamic), funk (present low mids), jazz (definition and articulation), rock (solid foundation), and urban music (clean and controllable low end). In passive mode, you get a more direct and organic approach; in active mode, you gain precision and control to carve out your place in the mix.

Sound: the balance of alder, the snap of maple, and the precision of Super-J Revolution pickups

The alder body is a classic choice for this type of bass: it provides a balanced spectrum, with a low-midrange that "speaks" easily and a consistent response across the neck. It's an excellent choice if you want an instrument that remains clear in a band without excessive harshness, while retaining punch for finger or pick attacks.

The hard maple neck (C-shaped profile) contributes to the feeling of speed and clarity. Maple is appreciated for its responsiveness: notes start quickly, ghost notes stand out well, and percussive playing (slap, strong right-hand technique) maintains great definition. The 241 mm radius offers a comfortable compromise: round enough for chords and left-hand positions, while still effective for low action and modern playing.

Regarding pickups, the Marcus Miller Super-J Revolution Pickup Set aims for precise string articulation and a balanced response between warmth and brightness. The blend (Blender) control allows fine adjustment between the two pickups to shift from a tighter, more precise sound to a fuller tone with more body and width. Combined with the Marcus Heritage-3 preamp and its mid-frequency control, you can tailor your presence in the mix: scooped mids for a more "hi-fi" slap, boosted mids to cut through fingerstyle playing, or a more neutral setting for an easy-to-process studio foundation.

The Volume / Tone / Blender / Treble / Middle / Bass controls provide a very comprehensive approach, and the push/pull for passive mode is ideal for securing a gig (or quickly returning to simplicity) without sacrificing the instrument's character. Finally, the Marcus Miller Modern-S bridge contributes to a clear attack and good note sustain, essential on a 5-string where a stable and playable B string is expected.

Recommended compatible accessories

For this 5-string bass, prioritize a 5-string electric bass string set with a long scale 34" / 860 mm to ensure appropriate length and consistent tension, especially on the B string. A good quality instrument jack cable is also recommended to fully benefit from the active/passive electronics and minimize noise during rehearsals or on stage.
