The Arius "S" Series: The Yamaha Piano Spirit Designed for Modern Interiors
The Yamaha Arius YDP-S55 is part of the "S" variant of the Arius range, known for its slimmer format and furniture-style design that easily fits into living rooms, offices, or bedrooms. The goal remains true to Arius DNA: to offer a digital piano oriented towards acoustic piano, without unnecessary complexity, with serious touch, Yamaha reference sound, and learning features that support both beginners and returning pianists.
Keyboard Design
At the heart of the experience, the 88-key Graded Hammer 3 (GH3) keyboard reproduces graded hammer action: heavier in the bass and lighter in the treble, just like an acoustic piano. This gradation improves dynamic control, chord precision, and rhythmic stability, while maintaining good responsiveness for faster playing.
The keys feature synthetic ivory and ebony surfaces for a more natural feel under the fingers and better grip, especially during long sessions. The 3-pedal system (Sustain with half-pedal, Sostenuto, Soft) allows working on piano repertoire with more gradual pedal pressure and more musical legato control.
Sound Quality
The YDP-S55 is based on sampling of the Yamaha CFX concert grand piano, appreciated for its clear highs and deep lows. The Virtual Resonance Modeling Lite (VRM Lite) technology adds life to the sound by simulating sympathetic resonances, enhancing the sense of space and harmonic continuity, especially with the pedal.
With a 192-note polyphony and 10 voices, playing remains clean and smooth on chord-rich pieces, layered sounds (Dual), and passages with sustain. Sound projection is ensured by 2 x 20 W amplification and a Tone Escapement design that promotes more natural projection from the cabinet, while stereophonic optimization improves headphone listening comfort.
Built-in Effects
- 4 types of reverb
- Stereophonic optimization (headphones)
- Intelligent Acoustic Control (IAC)

Questions frequently asked
Does the Yamaha Arius YDP-S55 have a weighted keyboard?
The 88-key GH3 keyboard uses graded hammer action, heavier in the bass and lighter in the treble. Synthetic ivory and ebony key surfaces provide consistent finger grip.
Is half-pedaling possible on this digital piano?
The built-in pedal unit includes three pedals: sustain with half-pedal, sostenuto, and soft. The progressive control of the sustain pedal allows for nuanced resonance techniques.
What kind of piano sound does this model offer?
The sampling is based on the Yamaha CFX concert grand piano. VRM Lite technology simulates sympathetic resonance, especially when using the pedal. A 192-note polyphony supports sustained chords and passages.
Can two people play with headphones on the YDP-S55?
Two stereo headphone outputs of 6.35 mm format are available. The stereo optimization enhances headphone listening.
Can the YDP-S55 be connected to a computer?
The USB to Host connection allows MIDI communication with a computer or compatible music application. No MIDI DIN port or Bluetooth is included.
