The Birth of the Moog Synthesizer

It all started quietly in 1964, when Bob Moog designed a new electronic instrument at the request of composer Herb Deutsch. Herb wanted an instrument capable of creating complex and experimental sounds, tones difficult to find with other instruments or with studio tricks.

What Bob designed was not entirely new, but resulted from a powerful combination of existing ideas. These concepts, combined with elegant design choices, gave birth to a new, very powerful and revolutionary system. The new ideas contained in the Moog synthesizer took several years to become established, and it is likely that even the first users had only a vague idea of the extent of the possibilities offered by the new instrument.

During those first years, the typical Moog synthesizer customer was an experimental musician. These were avant-garde composers who wanted sounds beyond the limited range of organs and pianos; they wanted sounds literally never heard before. The Moog offered apparently infinite sound combinations compared to previous instruments.

In 1964, the idea of using modules to create an instrument was new. Modules allowed the selection of a unique set when designing an instrument, and the instrument could evolve over the years as new modules were added. Each module had a function, but many could be used alternatively (or even repurposed to create even more options). Some modules were the direct result of requests or challenges presented by Moog's musician friends. As a result, many Moog modules became valuable tools, almost perfect devices for their function and whose status is now legendary.

For many musicians, the original Moog modular synthesizers have never been surpassed; they remain the traditional reference for analog synthesis. These synthesizers are icons—visually, sonically, and historically. In general, electronic instruments are considered "obsolete" after only a few years, but Moog modular synthesizers have endured for good reasons; they defined an elegant design, high quality, and incredible sound.
