"Plasma" Distortion: Gamechanger Audio's Approach Since 2018
The Plasma Rack brings the concept that made Gamechanger Audio famous into a 1U rack format: an analog distortion based on a high-voltage transformer. Here, your signal is not just amplified and clipped like in classic saturation; it is converted into a series of rapid electrical discharges inside a xenon-filled tube, reaching up to 5,000 Volts.
These discharges are then captured by an electromagnetic receiver and converted back into audio. The result: massive distortion, rich in harmonics, with a very distinctive signature. The harmonics generated by this process deviate from the usual behaviors of traditional amplification, which explains why the Plasma has an "impossible to confuse" identity and is difficult to replicate with other circuits, plugins, or modeling.
Who Is the Plasma Rack For?
The Plasma Rack targets guitarists and bassists seeking radical distortion, as well as producers and sound engineers wanting an extreme color for tracking or insert processing. It excels whenever heavy, textured, harmonic-rich saturation is desired: modern rock, stoner, industrial, metal, noise, experimental music, as well as sound design and aggressive layers in the studio.
In live settings, its 1U rack format and MIDI presets make it a formidable tool for stable, recallable rigs. In the studio, it becomes a "character machine": perfect on a DI track for reamping, on synths, drum machines, percussion, or to transform a reverb into granular, cutting material.
Controls, Modes, and Studio Integration: A Plasma Designed for Sculpting
The Plasma Rack is not just spectacular; it is designed to be controllable. Its 3-band EQ targets key spectral zones, with gain ranges designed to truly shape the sonic footprint: a low shelving filter at 10 Hz (from -20 to 20 dB), a mid centered at 600 Hz (from -6 to 6 dB), and a high shelving filter at 20 kHz (from -10 to 10 dB).
The input gain (preamp from -26 dB to +12 dB) is used to precisely calibrate the attack and amount of saturation depending on the source: weaker microphones, higher line levels, or simply to push the input stage and change the dynamic behavior. Several modes then extend the palette: Sustain (adaptive compressor) to prolong and "hold" the tube at low voltage with an unpredictable edge, Oversaturate for an upper octave/harmonic effect reminiscent of Octavia, and Clean Gate to use the tube gate effect on a clean signal without adding saturation.
For rhythmic textures, the Tremolo / Ringmod exploits the raw bursts of the tube and produces very organic, sometimes abrasive, always lively modulations. And because some chains benefit from combining multiple clipping types, an integrated distortion channel (op-amp type) allows mixing a more "classic" saturation with the plasma character to instantly achieve a wider, denser sound. The Clean Gate setting can also apply the tube gate to the saturated channel for an ultra-clean, highly controlled result.
Regarding integration, the 3 effects loops (with switchable level control) turn the Plasma Rack into a true platform: FX LOOP 1 affects only the dry signal, FX LOOP 2 affects the effect before the plasma tube, and FX LOOP 3 affects the effect after the plasma tube. This allows placing an external EQ, compressor, reverb, delay, or even studio processing exactly at the right point in the chain.
Finally, MIDI control (In, Thru, Out) allows all parameters to be controlled via CC and sounds to be recalled via Program Change. The 8 preset slots store your settings (values and states), and recordable utility settings simplify preparing a live set. An assignable expression input lets you map any knob to an expression pedal for real-time tension swells, dynamic gates, or EQ sweeps.
Sound Character
The Plasma Rack delivers extremely heavy distortion, with saturation that "engulfs" the sound while projecting a large amount of harmonics. Where traditional distortion might smooth or standardize the high end, the Plasma tends to generate a more electric, unpredictable texture, with a very recognizable grain and a constant sense of tension.
Its response strongly depends on the source and input level: by adjusting the preamp, you can go from a more contained attack to an almost synthetic aggressiveness. The Sustain mode adds a form of sustain that can become unstable and inspiring, while Oversaturate brings high harmonics and a cutting presence, ideal for making a riff stand out or creating leads that cut through the mix. Thanks to Clean Gate, the Plasma can also become a tool for slicing and texturing, perfect for percussive sounds, chopped reverb tails, or very musical granular effects.

Questions frequently asked
What kind of sound does the plasma distortion produce?
The circuit is based on discharges in a xenon lamp, with an internal voltage reaching up to 5,000 V. The reconverted signal produces a dense saturation heavily loaded with harmonics.
Can the Plasma Rack be controlled via MIDI and recall settings?
Eight preset locations store the values and states of the settings. The MIDI In, Thru, and Out connectors enable recall via Program Change. All parameters can be controlled via CC messages.
What audio connections are available?
The unit features an unbalanced 6.35 mm jack instrument input and a balanced XLR output.
How do the three effects loops operate?
Three loops are integrated with switchable levels. FX Loop 1 processes the dry signal only, Loop 2 affects the signal before the lamp, and Loop 3 acts after the lamp.
Is the Plasma Rack suitable for bass or synths?
The adjustable preamp from -26 dB to +12 dB adapts the input level to various sources. This rack format can handle guitars, basses, synths, drum machines, and percussion.
