A stage clonewheel inspired by the great tonewheel classics
The Viscount Legend by KeyB is designed for organists looking for the soul of a classic tonewheel organ without the constraints of a bulky cabinet. Its portable format, dedicated real-time performance control panel and highly direct approach make it an instrument built for the stage, gospel, jazz, rock and any repertoire where the organ needs to stay alive under your fingers.
Within the range, this model stands out for its pure organist-focused ergonomics: instantly accessible drawbars, harmonic percussion positioned exactly where you expect it, independently selectable vibrato/chorus between the two keyboards and advanced rotary control. A JdF Signature Edition is also available, featuring Joey DeFrancesco’s signature satin Black finishing, along with organ models and their effects adjusted according to his playing preferences.
Keyboard design
The Legend features two robust 61-note waterfall keyboards designed for organ touch, rather than for piano playing with a heavy action. This design facilitates glissandos, palm smears, rapid repetitions and the precise dynamics characteristic of the organ. The feel is intentionally more direct than that of a weighted keyboard, preserving the flexibility essential for changing registrations and strong attacks.
Two " black octaves ", one per manual, allow registrations to be recalled and modified in real time, following the approach of historic tonewheel organs. For musicians who play with a pedalboard, a standard-size 25-note console pedalboard is available as an option, with spacing close to that of classic models to preserve familiar sensations underfoot.
Sound quality
Here, the priority is not a general-purpose sound bank, but an in-depth reproduction of the tonewheel organ. The modeling engine developed by Viscount and KeyB aims to reproduce the harmonic richness, attack, leakage between tonewheels and lively character that give great electromechanical organs their distinctive appeal. The drawbars, key click and 2nd- and 3rd-harmonic percussion allow you to sculpt a highly expressive sound, from mellow jazz to energetic rock.
The rotary cabinet and amplifier simulation are an integral part of the instrument’s sonic identity, with several behaviors directly accessible from the lower controls. Depending on the version, particularly the JdF Signature Edition, certain organ models are cloned from Joey DeFrancesco’s personal instruments, used both in the studio and on stage. The result focuses less on absolute versatility than on genuine playing credibility for organ purists.
